I started running Tuesday morning. Deciding that I needed to stave off getting as old as Pastor Jay, I rolled out of bed at 5:45 am, threw on my running shoes, and headed out the door. I did a mile-and-a-half in a half-hour. I thought it wasn’t too bad. Until I woke up this morning, and apparently my legs stopped working.
While running yesterday morning, God reminded me of the parallels between running and prayer. I’ve been reading the book Too Busy Not to Pray by Bill Hybels and have been struck by how poor my prayer life is. Tuesday morning as my sweat froze to my body, I was reminded how prayer is exactly the same. It’s hard to get your rear outta bed and get started. At the start, you pathetically suck for air and run really slow. But, you are starting. And as you continue to keep going, it becomes easy and natural.
Paul puts it like this in 1 Timothy 4.8: “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”
Start praying today. It may be unnatural and hard, but it’s an imperative part of your spiritual life and mine.
