Policy & Procedure Manual - 3.9

Election of Deacons

Deacons shall be elected at the annual congregational meeting.

Nomination

  • A nominating committee shall be chaired by the Pastor and comprise the Pastor and two or three deacons who are not eligible for election this term.
  • The congregation will be asked to provide nominations.
  • The nominating committee will review nominations. Qualified nominees will be polled regarding their willingness to serve.
  • Only candidates that come through this process will be eligible for election
  • The nominating committee will present the names to the congregation at least one week prior to the congregational meeting.

Election

  • Election shall occur by secret ballot
  • A deacon will be elected by receiving at least 2/3 of votes cast
  • At each vote, one ballot will be distributed and collected. Those voting will select a candidate for each open position (i.e. if there are two openings, each ballot cast will identify two selections).
  • When ballots are tallied, those receiving the most votes will be considered elected as long as they receive the minimum votes required. The election will be announced; at no time will the specific distribution of votes be announced.
  • Subsequent ballots will be distributed and collected until all openings are filled. In each case, the subsequent ballot shall have removed the name of the candidate with the least number of votes.
